ART: Contemporary galleries, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool

I’m excited to see the rehang of the Walker’s contemporary galleries because it included putting some of its recent acquisitions on public display for the first time, beginning to fill the gaps in its collection. Michael Landy’s kinetic sculpture Multi-Saint (2013) is at the centre, surrounded by new works including Shaqúelle Whyte’s In an embroiled fashion (2025), Eva Helene Pade’s I mørket (In the dark) (2025) and Louise Giovanelli’s Mise en scène (2025), Ebun Sodipo’s diptych What if Laure Was / A Black Goddess Come to Earth (2025), and photographs from Jenny Lewis’ UnBecoming series. Ongoing, free entry.

ART: Cut From the Same Cloth, Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington

It’s your last chance to see this selection of pieces by textile artist James Fox, created to mark the 200th anniversary of the Lancashire Weavers’ Uprising, an anti-starvation protest involving many thousands of local people. It’s a multi-venue exhibition, also at The Whitaker Art Gallery & Museum, Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, Lancashire Archives, the Weavers Cottage and Lancaster Castle. Ends 5 July, free entry.

MUSIC: Songs of the Luminous Heart, Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room

Milap presents this unique performance featuring vocals, harp, esraj and tabla, bringing together Indian and European folk traditions in a rich, genre-defying collaboration. And there will be free chai to enjoy during the performance, provided by Indian restaurant Dishoom. Friday 26 June, tickets £ 16/£13.

THEATRE: Miss Saigon, Blackpool Winter Gardens

Miss Saigon was the first show I saw in the West End, as an impressionable 14-year-old, and it remains one of my most powerful memories. So it was with some trepidation that I watched this touring production when it visited the Empire Theatre in Liverpool earlier this year. Relief! Even to this much older, jaded theatre reviewer it remained a fantastic piece of storytelling, with much that could be applied to world events today. Ends Saturday 4 July, tickets from £25.95.

THEATRE: Jekyll and Hyde, Everyman Theatre, Liverpool

It’s always a treat to see a Young Everyman Playhouse production and to be surprised by where they take you. This time YEP group is taking over the theatre’s main stage with a bold new adaptation of RL Stevenson’s classic tale by award-winning playwright Evan Placey, reimagined for the digital age. Excitingly, YEP is working in partnership with LIPA, whose students have worked on set and costume design as well as stage management. Ends Saturday 4 July, tickets £10-£12.

THEATRE: How Soon is Now?, Lowry, Salford

This indie musical about female friendship, empowerment and hope, set to a live soundtrack of 90s classics, will premiere at Lowry before embarking on a UK tour. Written by Siân Owen and centring Northern voices, it captures the highs and lows, darkness and light of a big night out on New Year’s Eve. Thursday 1- Saturday 3 October, tickets from £16.50.

EXHIBITION: Roaming Britain: Gypsy and Traveller Homes, RIBA North + Tate Liverpool

Exploring how Gypsies and Traveller communities shape their homes through stories, art, and poetry, this exhibition is a celebration of lives lived outside the status quo - while highlighting the forces and ideas that threaten them. As well as photographs of their living spaces and the often handmade items that make them home, there are works that express their cultures in different ways, including Mitch Miller’s A Showman’s Yard - a meticulously detailed pen and ink graphic of the places and people of Glasgow’s Showmen community. Ends Sunday 6 September, free entry.

EXHIBITION: Manchester Open 2026, HOME

Some 1,500 artists from across Greater Manchester entered this year and the 420 selected works are now on display in the biggest celebration of the region’s artists and creative talent. People of all experience are featured, including first-time artists and enthusiasts as well as emerging talent and established professionals. Pieces include ceramics; digital/moving image, drawings; prints, paintings, photography, sculpture/installation and textiles. Ends Sunday 6 September, free entry.

EVENT: Liverpool Art Fair, Royal Liver Building

The Liver Building is filled with work by artists across the region as the Liverpool Art Fair returns for another year. The focus is on making art affordable for all so the paintings, prints and sculptures on display is all priced under £2,500 and there is also a large section under £250, with limited edition prints starting at £25. Open 7 days a week until Sunday 26 July, free entry.

FESTIVAL: Africa Oye, Sefton Park, Liverpool

The UK’s largest celebration of African music and culture returns to Sefton Park this weekend with a main stage, DJ stage, an active zone and stalls. Se my interview with artistic director Paul Duhaney below for more details on the headliners. Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June. Tickets are priced £19, £16 NHS/student, under-12s are free and there’s a discount if you’re buying four or more tickets in one transaction.

THEATRE: The Car Man, Lowry, Salford

Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance thriller The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s opera Carmen. The 19th century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger. Tuesday 23 to Saturday 27 June.

THEATRE: SAVAGE, Liverpool Playhouse

Inspired by the life of Paul O’Grady, this new comedy will star RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner Danny Beard. Written by multi-award-winning Jonathan Harvey (Our Lady of Blundellsands, Canary, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Coronation Street, Beautiful Thing), the show follows Paul’s journey from the streets of Merseyside to the heart of London’s club scene, where, armed with little more than his wits and a wig, he began carving out a place for himself. Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 March 2027, tickets £17-£51.

'How we're keeping Africa Oyé affordable'

Africa Oyé returns this weekend after a year’s hiatus to work out how it can continue despite rising costs and ever-increasing audiences. Amid the delight that it’s coming back there have been questions and concerns raised over the changes, which include it becoming a ticketed event for the first time in its 34-year history.

The festival’s director Paul Duhaney spared me some time for a chat during a busy week of meetings for the organisation, to share more information about what to expect and the efforts they’ve put in to make the event as affordable as they can.

What made you move from a free, unfenced event to a ticketed one?

It was mainly around health and safety. The cost implications of those health and safety measures meant that it was no longer viable to have it as a free festival. We just couldn’t make it work as a business model.

The amount of people you get determines how much you have to pay for equipment and how much security you have to have, and how many toilets. But the main thing was that it was open plan and that it was an environment that was susceptible to something happening because there were so many people - it was getting to 40,000 people a day last time. How do you mitigate if 60,000 people turn up this time? We need to know how many people are coming to ensure it’s a safe environment.

We wouldn’t have got a licence from Liverpool City Council if we hadn’t put these measures in place, so we literally had no choice.

What decisions did you make to try to keep the event affordable?

We covered as many bases as we could in terms of the concessions we’ve put in place. People can’t bring barbecues and stuff like they used to but we’re allowing them to bring a small picnic with them, we’re making sure that all the traders have at least one affordable meal on. We’ve got pub prices as opposed to festival bar prices on our bars.

Most importantly we’re allowing passes out so if somebody wants to come in, stay for a couple of hours and pop over to Lark Lane and or any other place and have a drink or something to eat and then come back, they can do that.

We understand that there are lots of families and if you’re a single parent with four kids you’ve got to feed them - we have to keep that in mind and keep the festival as accessible as possible.

We’ve also given away about 2,000 tickets a day to local residents, to local groups, community groups, and corporate companies have also been buying batches of tickets to distribute.

Tell me about the new family zone

We used to have an Active Zone, which was a lot smaller, and now we’ve increased that offer because we’re aware there’s going to be more people who come with families. So we’ve actually got a dedicated family zone with lots of free workshops and activities going on on both days for people of all ages and abilities. There are lots of kids rides and fairground stuff around there as well.

What else can we expect this year?

Obviously we’ve got the DJ stage with specifically local DJs this year. We usually invite DJs from outside the city too but because we’ve had to scale the capacity down from 40,000 to 12-15,000 we wanted to make sure the local DJs were looked after first, so that’s all that programme apart from our headliners, BBC Radio 1 DJs DJ Edu and Seani B.

Then on the international main stage we’re really lucky to have Fatoumata Diawara, one of the biggest stars in African music headlining on Sunday, and also Patoranking on Saturday evening - one of the biggest stars in Afrobeat, he’s got millions and millions of views on his various social networks. That’s supported by a massive programme from all over Africa and the diaspora incorporating calypso, Afrobeat, traditional Ghanian music…

And we have about 100 traders there selling food, arts and crafts and all kind of things like clothing.

Africa Oyé is at Sefton Park, Liverpool on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June. Tickets are priced £19, £16 NHS/student, under-12s are free and there’s a discount if you’re buying four or more tickets in one transaction.

Unseen prints and a two-time Olivier nominee

I have really enjoyed writing this very first new look weekly edition of Stored Honey. Sometimes it’s a pleasure to be able to write some chattier, more succinct observations about exhibitions and shows I’ve loved or am looking forward to. The idea is that you can read the whole lot or scroll to the things you might like to go to - whatever way works best for you. You’ll notice that I’ve cheated the system on the very first week by squeezing in an extra ‘thing’.

5 6 things to do this week

EXHIBITION: Making a Mark: Artworks from the Studio Prints Collection, Victoria Gallery & Museum, Liverpool

A show of 45 works created at pioneering printmaking studio, Studio Prints, established by British artist and printmaker Dorothea Wight in 1968, including pieces by Wight and her partner Marc Balakjian, Frank Auerbach and Lucian Freud. The collection was gifted to the University of Liverpool in 2019 and this is the first time they’ve been displayed since.

I took the obvious decision to illustrate this with one of Freud’s etchings because his style is instantly recognisable, but while it is a treat to see a whole wall of his work, this exhibition would still have been strong without him. I was particularly drawn to the colours in Wight’s mezzotints of windows, and by Balakjian’s ability to make 2D prints appear to be made of fabric or rope. And then there are Stephen Conroy’s haunting faces… (I’m planning a longer feature on this exhibition in an upcoming edition so I must stop myself to save something for that). Saturday 13 June 2026 to Saturday 30 January 2027, free entry.

THEATRE: Something Rotten, Manchester Opera House

It’s the 1590s and brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but remain stuck in the shadow of that pompous Renaissance rockstar Will Shakespeare and somehow end up inventing the musical. Starring Jason Manford, Richard Fleeshman and two-time Olivier nominee Marisha Wallace. Tuesday 16 June to Sunday 19 July, tickets from £15.60.

FESTIVAL: Wirral Open Studio Tour, various locations

I am totally biased when it comes to this event as I’ve been helping the organisers with its publicity, but it would be remiss of me to leave it out of this week’s list just in case you haven’t heard all about it. More than 90 artists are opening the doors of their studios right across Wirral - it’s a great chance to have a nose behind the scenes, chat with the artists and maybe even pick up a work for your walls. I was at Wellington Road Studios in Oxton this week, while the artists were in the middle of getting ready, and there’s a buzz of excitement. Saturday 13 to Sunday 14 June, free entry.

MUSIC: Simone Lamsma, Tung Auditorium, Liverpool

Former Liverpool Philharmonic artist-in-residence and violinist Simone Lamsma partners with pianist Jonathan Fournel for a recital of Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, Fauré’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in A major, Op.13, Brahms’ Violin Sonata No .3 in D minor, Op.108 and Ravel’s Tzigane. Sunday 14 June, tickets £31.

EXHIBITION: 10 x 10, Saul Hay Gallery, Manchester

This was recommended to me by a number of different artists, which is always a good sign. Sadly Saul Hay Gallery is leaving Castlefield after nearly 10 years to move online, and for its final exhibition has invited back 50 artists from its past and present. Each of those have recommended another artist, making a total of 100 10cm x 10cm works. Ends Sunday 28 June, free entry.

EXHIBITION: ZAUM! 50MV, Waterloo

A group show of contemporary artists exploring new directions through the language of painting, or reference to it, alongside a work by the late Sir Terry Frost who was a pioneer in British Abstraction. The title Zaum! takes its name from an experimental language that rejects grammar and fixed meaning, first used in the 1913 Russian Futurist opera Victory over the Sun. There’s also a playlist to accompany the exhibition. Opens Saturday 13 June 6-8pm, and by appointment from Sunday 14 to Sunday 28 June, free entry.

The Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical Hadestown, currently playing its third hit year in London’s West End, is touring to three North West venues next year. Take a journey to the underworld and back with two Ancient Greek love stories - young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone. Lowry, Salford, 9-20 March 2027; Liverpool Empire Theatre, 6-10 July (booking opening soon); Storyhouse Chester, 2-6 November.

Beneath the stage of the Liverpool Olympia is a pit once used to keep elephants. It would raise up in front of a dazzled audience, astounding them with the spectacle.
